Textbooks
Overdue Books
Textbooks are borrowed on a semester basis. At the conclusion of the respective semester, all textbooks must be returned to the Textbook Room. Opportunity is expressly provided shortly before, and during, the exam period. Unreturned textbooks are considered 'overdue'. Students with overdue items will be unable to sign out textbooks for their next semester until their records have been cleared.
Lost books must be replaced at full cost, as determined by Textbook Room staff. Cheques for replacement costs can be made out to Ernestown Secondary.
Grade 12 Deposit Information
Every Grade 12 student, or returning graduate, is required to pay a $20 deposit per course ($80 for a full time student). This applies to all Grade 12 students, regardless if they are in a Grade 12 class or not. This fee is nonnegotiable: to get a text, the deposit must be paid.
If, at the end of the year, all texts are returned in acceptable condition, the deposit is returned to the student, in cash, in person, with receipt. If a textbook is not returned, or if one is returned with extreme damage, the deposit will be applied towards the replacement of the text. The student will be charged the remainder of the replacement cost.
Deposits carry over. Therefore, if you have paid $60 in the first semester, that same $60 is applied to your courses in the second, provided that all of the first semester texts have been returned.
Deposits are returned during the January and June exam periods. Deposits are returned in January only if the student can prove they will not be returning to the school in the second semester.
To retrieve the deposit, please follow these instructions.
· It is the responsibility of the STUDENT to follow these directions and retrieve their own refund, not the staff to locate the students individually.
· To receive a full refund, all textbooks from semesters 1 and 2 must be returned to Mr. Clark. This is determined to have occurred when the student’s electronic record reads zero (0) items outstanding. If it is unclear which texts are outstanding, see Mr. Clark in the library for a list.
· All texts must be handed in before or during the exam period. Deposits will be refunded with the return of the LAST item on the student’s record.
· Deposits will be returned in CASH during the exam week, in person. It is the responsibility of the student to come to Mr. Clark to retrieve his or her refund. Unlike in previous years, the deposits will not be mailed to the students during the summer.
· With the return of the deposit, the student and Mr. Clark will BOTH sign and be issued a receipt, as proof that the transaction has occurred. This will serve as evidence of the return should any disputes occur.
During the exam period, Mr. Clark will be available between 8:00 and 8:30 am; and 10:00 and 11:00 am. Students wishing the return of their deposits must find Mr. Clark in the bookroom between these hours.
Lockers
Lockers are assigned at the beginning of the year, according to Homeroom. Students must be in the lockers they are assigned. Lockers numbers can be found on student timetables. Any students found in lockers unassigned to them will be given one warning. Should the locker not be abdicated, the contents will be removed.
Students must use Ernestown approved Dudley locks, which must be purchased from the school for $10. Locks purchased in Grade Nine are expected to be used for a student's entire career at Ernestown. Any students found using a lock which is not school approved will be given one warning. Should the offending lock not be removed, it will be cut off, and the contents of the locker removed for safety.
Locker Contents
Students maintain possession of their assigned lockers for the entire school year. During the June exams, it is the responsibility of the student to clean the locker of all contents and remove their lock. At the conclusion of the June exams, all lockers are cleaned by staff. Locks left on lockers will be reappropriated by the school. Contents will be removed, and kept in the Textbook Room until October of the following year. Any contents not claimed during the summer, or in the first month of the new year, will be placed in the Lost and Found. Lost and Found items unclaimed are donated to charity.
